Texas
Everything is bigger in Texas. With wide open spaces and large metropolitan cities, the Lone Star State is the ideal holiday destination. As the largest of the 48 conterminous states (it's number two counting Alaska), Texas is a year-round destination that offers more than just a cowboy experience.
Visitors to Texas are greeted with a sparkling coastline, breathtaking national and state parks, an endless choice of luxury golf and spa resorts, and activities ranging from hiking and biking to bird watching and boating – plus it has outstanding arts and cultural facilities.
The five cities of Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio are all unique in their own right. Austin is known for its music; Dallas for its culture, Fort Worth for its cowboy heritage, Houston for its space history and connection with NASA, and San Antonio as the location of the famous Battle of the Alamo.
If that is not enough to tempt you, Galveston has a growing reputation as a leading port for cruising holidays to the Caribbean. The years 2011 and 2012 will see the likes of Disney Cruises and Carnival Cruises launching new ships and Caribbean cruising holidays from Galveston, alongside the current cruise schedule.
With daily flights to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Houston International Airport with British Airways, American Airways and Continental, Texas is one of the most accessible states in the US and is a must on everyone’s USA to-do holiday list.
Travel Tips
- With more than 600 miles of coastline along the Gulf of Mexico, Texas is an ideal destination for a family beach holiday. Corpus Christi and Galveston boast golden sands and warm waters. The best time to visit is in the spring or autumn, with pleasant temperatures reaching highs of 24°C.
- Check out the live music! Austin, the Texan capital, is known as the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’. With over 200 live venues across the city, it's the perfect destination for music lovers.
- Big Bend National Park has river canyons and tall mountains and is an adventure playground waiting to be explored. Whether you choose to hike through the mountains, canoe through the canyons or fly above the mountain peaks there is something for everybody.
- Take a stroll along the San Antonio River; it's the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Amble down its banks and sit for lunch in one of the many restaurants offering the famous Tex-Mex cuisine. Or, for a more leisurely journey, cruise down the river on a river boat.
- You can't visit Texas without having your Stetsons at the ready and visiting a ranch. Visit the Fort Worth Stockyards, where cowboys and girls still herd their longhorns down the main street each day, a tradition that started in the late 19th century.
