  1. Singapore’s Botanic Gardens are a must-visit: it's best to go on a weekday morning (avoid it altogether at weekends). It's a great place to relax: you'll see people reading books here in the quiet near the koi pond, or sketching on notepads the image of an exotic bird and its  beautiful surroundings. A visit here is possibly one of the best Zen activities to do when the full-on city of Singapore gets under your skin.
  2. Families and nature lovers will appreciate gems like Jurong Bard Park with more than 8,000 species of exotic and endangered birds. Highlights include the African Waterfall, falconry lessons, and bird shows.  Also look out for the River Safari, which opens in 2012.
  3. One of Singapore’s most colourful and fascinating neighbourhoods is Little India. It’s fun to visit at any time of day — around sunset is perfect—to hear the Hindi music belting from portable radios, smell the wafts of pungent incense, and see spices mounded up in shop front windows. There are hundreds of shops selling clothes, electronics, staples and food near Serangoon Road.
  4. To get a good idea of where Asian craft-brewed beers are moving these days, reserve a table at Archipelago Brewery on Circular Road. For nearly 100 years, the brand made Tiger Beer, but is now offering a new range of Asian-influenced beers, and nightly tasting tours that are a bargain and a delight.
  5. There is no shortage of luxury hotels. Check in to Singapore’s Stamford Hotel for views and fine dining. Drop into floors 70-71, where there are four restaurants to choose from, with views of the city that are unparalleled. Courtyard suites at Raffle’s Singapore Hotel are a smart splurge. These four-room living areas are decorated with oriental rugs and teak wood flooring, and have massive verandahs that pear on to exquisite courtyard gardens. Among other perks at this landmark hotel are a shopping arcade, a Victorian theatre and the world famous Long Bar, where the Singapore Sling was born.
