Paris
Rex Features
The capital of France offers the visitor so many treats that most will come back many times: the opportunities and things to see and do are limitless. The stunning architecture of world-famous buildings such as the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame, the views of the River Seine and quaint streets full of cafes and brasseries: there are so many things that attract visitors for weekend visits, but you could spend months exploring it and not get bored. Also known as 'the City of Light', Paris is a city that is renowned for its artistic heritage.
Paris is divided into 29 arrondissements, arranged like a snail shell around the Seine. The most familiar of these are the areas such as the Bastille, Louvre, Marais, Montmartre and Opera, as well as the famous Latin Quarter. There are nearly 400 metro stations, so it's easy to get around.
Paris buzzes with world class events year round, including Paris Plages, Paris Jazz Festival, the French Open, the Tour de France and Rock en Seine.
Travel Tips
- The best way to get around is by Metro. Many first-time visitors are put off by the map, but it’s easy to use once you get the hang of it – and it’s a lot cheaper than taking taxis - which happen to be among the most expensive in Europe. Save money by buying a carnet of ten tickets, or, if you're going to be doing a lot of travelling, invest in a Mobilis (a day pass) or a Paris Visite for two, three or five days. Prices for these depend on how many zones you're planning on visiting.
- You don't have to spend a fortune when you eat out. Steer clear of the heavily touristy areas and you can treat yourself without blowing your budget. For example, if you head for the Marais, you'll find good falafel stands as well as some traditional bistros with jolly decent menus. Creperies, too, are good value for snacking on the go - try the Montmartre for some of the best you can buy.
- Go shopping off the beaten track. Forget the Avenue des Champs Elysees - bargain hunters should head instead for Les Puces de Paris, a sprawling flea market on the edge of the city (Saint Ouen, Metro – Porte de Clignancourt). You’ll find vintage fashion, furniture, crockery, books and more. Practice your haggling en Français before you go!
- You can find secret retreats and lovely views around every corner. Climb the stairs from the busy Bastille quarters' Avenue Daumesnil to the top of the viaduct, for example, and you’ll find the beautiful Promenade Plantee with its profusion of cherry trees, maples, rose bushes and lavender - a haven that feels far from the crowds below.
- Paris is for kids both big and small! Don’t miss the marionettes in the Jardin des Tuileries, ride a donkey in the Champ de Mars, and head for Montmartre to bask in the fiesta atmosphere every Sunday afternoon. Take the Metro to Anvers and then the funicular that carries you up to the Sacre-Coueur for a fun ride with fab views.
