  1. There are a lot of top-notch eateries in Dubai, but the dominant flavour of the city tends to be Lebanese, delicious and garlic-doused. For something light and fresh, with a monumental location on a man-made palm-shaped luxury island, consider Japanese cuisine at Nobu in The Palm Jumeirah.
  2. Jumeirah Beach Hotel is a hot ticket for travellers that want to be away from the dense inland development of the city. The new beach front resort has rooms, suites and villas, restaurants and bars for adults, water parks, a kids' clubhouse and child care for children.
  3. Sports enthusiasts and adventure-seekers will find plenty to do. Tag along with a desert safari or hit the slopes at Ski Dubai. Try some stellar snorkelling and scuba diving trips at Al Boom Diving, or, if you feel like being transported in a basket over beautiful desert and seascapes, a five-hour Dubai hot air balloon flight adventure might be right up your street.
  4. Views from the observation deck at the Burj Khalifa (the tallest building in the world) are spectacular. Purchase tickets online or on the ground floor of the building. If you can’t be bothered to pay for the view, at least stop into the building’s Armani bar, part of the Armani Hotel, and watch the synchronised fountain show with a drink in hand.
  5. If you like off-road adventures, you might want to book into one of Viator’s Safari Desert Tours. Take on sand dunes the size of a small mountain in a 4x4 or use them as slopes for sand boarding. Viator offers a range of affordable jaunts into the sandy wilderness, even a spellbinding dinner under the stars.
