  1. Do not leave without a visit to Beijing’s Forbidden City. Yes, it is on the tourist trail, and yes, it can be annoying, but it is also monumental. As the former seat of the Chinese Imperial Palace during the Ming Dynasty, the walls, gates, lakes, urban layout and scale makes the Roman Forum look like a laughable heap of rocks.
  2. Check in at the new 417-room Sofitel Wanda Beijing, an uber-luxury hot spot taking its design cues from French and Chinese influences. The Sofitel Wanda is a good base to start from as it’s loaded with fine dinning restaurants, a giant spa and health club, and conveniently linked to good transport nodes that shuttle you to anywhere you'll want to visit throughout Beijing.
  3. One of the most unique experiences to take in while visiting Beijing is the Tianqiao Acrobatics Theatre. Besides the body-bending acts and daredevil leaps and swings, the 100-year-old theatre is a handsome spot to spend an evening and, apart from acrobatic performances, the famous singers or comedians will be headlining the event.
  4. The mind-boggling size of Beijing can exhaust your nerves and place your back in a knot. Which calls for an afternoon of pampering, and although there are many good spas in the city, mostly at fancy hotels, the Dragonfly Therapeutic Retreat is marked as one of the best. There are more than six locations to choose from in Beijing.
  5. Even if you don’t eat the sautéed grasshoppers or deep-fried scorpions at Donghuamen Night Market, it’s a very entertaining place to visit, and you can find more recognisable samplings of spring rolls, dumplings and lamb skewers. Best time to visit are Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
