  1. Adventurous types shouldn't miss the Via Algarviana, 240km of nature trails stretching across the Algarve between Alcoutim in the east to Costa Vincentina in the west. Each section is divided into 30km stretches so visitors can break up their itinerary or simply stick to a section of the route while staying in rural tourism developments and traditional villages. For walkers, the full route can be completed in 14 days, while cyclists can do it in five. For something different, try it on horseback - it takes around nine days with knowledgeable guides. However you travel, you can stay in some wonderfully unique Algarve accommodation available along the way.
  2. For something a bit different, stay at a reclaimed traditional Algarvian village near Vila do Bispo in the Costa Vicentina. Aldeia da Pedralva opened in 2009 - the village was previously almost abandoned but it has now been transformed into an active hotspot. It's the perfect location to get away from it all and for nature and energetic tourism such as surfing, kite-surfing, bike riding, trekking and fishing.
  3. Sporting fanatics are in for a treat: a 200 million euro (£149 million) track, Motorpark, in Portimão opened in November 2008 and has hosted major events such as the final round of the Superbike World Championship. It covers 300 hectares of land between Portimão and the hills of Monchique, with a capacity for up to 100,000 spectators. The motorpark complex also includes a five-star hotel with events facilities, apartments and restaurants.
  4. Nature-lovers should definitely visit the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, an area comprised of beautiful sand dunes, marsh lands, lagoons and fresh water lakes. Its diverse group of inhabitants includes birds, fish, mammals and amphibians. Accessible by road or ferry from Faro and Olhão, it makes a great day out. Visit the recuperation centre for birds, follow the self-guided nature trails and admire the park’s elegance on a ride in a traditional fishing boat.
  5. A trip up into the hills of the Serra de Monchique - where the natural spa of Caldas de Monchique can be found - is a must. At 250 metres above sea level, set amid lush green vegetation, it benefits from natural thermal springs referred to as ‘Sacred Waters’ by the Romans.
