The Democratic Republic of Congo remains violent, dangerous and notoriously unstable. But should peace ever break out in this long-suffering cauldron of chaos, the potential for adventurous travellers is nothing short of mind-blowing.
Travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo remains a very risky proposition.
Fighting erupted in the streets of Kinshasa in mid-March 2007 and while the immediate violence has subsided the situation remains volatile. Any travellers in Kinshasa should exercise extreme caution, closely monitor news services and keep in contact with consular officials.
Outside of Kinshasa, travel is hazardous and difficult and many regions are highly insecure, particularly in the east and north of the country. The northeastern region of Ituri around the town of Bunia is especially dangerous. The North Kivu district is the scene of conflict between government forces and army rebels. Entry from Uganda or Rwanda should not be attempted.
Travellers should exercise high levels of caution, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and monitor local media.
