What it's great for: Chic boutiques
Why? Other cities can try, but nowhere can match Paris for a classy shopping experience. There's no bigger-is-better mentality and elegance is the name of the game. There are big international names - such as Issey Miyake, Christian Dior and Hermes - but part of the enjoyment comes from exploring the resolutely French smaller boutiques.
Alternatively... If priced out of the designer shops, try Paris' three fantastic flea markets. Of these, the Saint Ouen flea market is the biggest in the world and contains an unbelievable rage of bargains amongst the tat.
