What it's great for: Department stores.
Why? New York is the spiritual home of the truly great department store, and the lavish shopping heavens where you can buy just about anything include Bloomingdale's, Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue. With the current pound to dollar exchange rate, just about everything is a bargain. What's more, any clothes/ shoes under $110 are tax-free.
Alternatively... If the wallet is heaving, then Madison Avenue is the place to go. Most of the big designers and fashion houses - Gaultier, Armani, Prada, Chanel - have stores on New York's premier fashion street.
