Uzupis
Where: Vilnius, Lithuania.
The story: Always an arty area of the Lithuanian capital, the local residents took their different outlook on life a little further in 1997 when they decided to declare the suburb independent. Uzupis has its own president, currency, twelve man army and constitution. The latter can be seen in big letters in the main square, and includes such gems as "A dog has the right to be a dog".
What to expect: Head there on April 1st for the 'National Day'. The date wasn't chosen by accident, and all festivities are conducted in a thoroughly tongue in cheek manner.
