The pick of Europe's best beaches
What's your idea of a perfect beach? Gently shelving white sand, a secluded cove or somewhere to chill and strut your stuff? Your idea of heaven may be another's beach from hell. Whether you’re a beach bum or beach babe, we've picked out the best of the bunch for you.
Western Algarve
Coves, caves, grottos, sandy beaches - the Algarve has it all. With so many to choose from, it's difficult knowing where to start. For the prettiest secluded coves, widest sandy beaches and most dramatic honeycomb cliffs, head west from Albufeira.
Benagil beach, near Carvoeiro, is an absolute gem and easy to miss. The cars parked on the roadside are a clue. Tucked away behind a towering craggy cliff, you will find beautiful soft golden sands and great bathing. ItÂ’s far from secluded but because itÂ’s hidden from view, you feel that youÂ’ve made a true discovery.
There's a small kiosk selling drinks and snacks, or why not take a trip in a small fishing boat and explore the picturesque coastline and wonderful caves?
Farther along the coast, you will find four fabulous cove beaches at Lagos, a former Moorish town with harbour and wide bay. Take a boat trip and check out the fascinating rock sculptures at Ponta da Piedade.
For golden sands as far as the eye can see, head to Praia da Rocha, where the beach is great for kids and the town is buzzing with restaurants and bars – definitely not one for the escapists!
