Short-haul autumn sun - Essaouira, Morocco
Grey sky getting you down? Fear not, for the AOL guide to autumn getaways is here, so you can soak up the last rays of 2009. From Crete to the Canaries, these places are hot this autumn...
Essaouira, Morocco
Why there? This medieval port on Morocco's Atlantic coastline is a four-hour ride from Marrakesh. A chilled-out, creative vibe, Portuguese colonial architecture and sweeping bays make it an intriguing autumn option.
What to do and see: The nearby bay of Moulay Bouzerktoune is a big hit with windsurfers. Alternatively you can take a boat to the Mogador islands and the bird sanctuary of Lies Purpuaires.
Nightlife: Souqs crammed with arts and crafts stay open well into the evening - you can see the renowned potters of Safi at work and then stroll down to the harbour to enjoy deliciously fresh - and absurdly cheap - grilled sardines.
Forecast: Essaouira enjoys a microclimate guaranteeing sunshine late into the year.
