Hot destinations for 2008: Virunga
If you’re wondering where to head for your holiday this year, here’s five new destinations that everyone will be talking about in 2008. You heard it here first…
Virunga Mountains, Rwanda
Where’s that? Close to the Ugandan border, central Africa.
Why?
It's one of the last places on earth to see wild mountain gorillas. Rwanda was off-limits to tourists until recently, and is now becoming a must-see safari destination.
What is there to do?
There are only about 650 wild mountain gorillas left in the world - and 300 of them are here, in the Parc des Volcans.
This is the region made famous by Dian Fossey, the wildlife campaigner played by Sigourney Weaver in the film Gorillas in the Mist. You'll have baby gorillas clambering over your back while the silver-back parents look on.
What else?
This place is teeming with wildlife. You’ll see lion, leopard, wildcats, monkeys and umpteen different species of bird.
When to go?
Avoid March to May, which is the rainy season.
