Salalah, Oman
Where's that? On the south coast, one-and-a-half hour's flight from the capital, Muscat.

Why:
It goes against everything you thought a desert should be. Forget dusty dunes and think stunning sandy beaches, emerald sea, rolling green hills and lazy meandering rivers.

What is there to do?
Laze on the beach all day, or immerse yourself in the fascinating history.

Make sure you see:
The lost city of Dhofar. This is the legendary settlement that Lawrence of Arabia spent years unsuccessfully searching for. Located in the Empty Quarter – the largest desert in the world – it played a pivotal part in the frankincense trade, which made the Middle East rich before oil.

What else?
This whole region is steeped in biblical history. Up in the hills, half an hour from the Salalah coast, you'll find Job's tomb.

When to go:
November to June. From July onwards, monsoon winds blow in from India, bringing a constant layer of cloud that stays until September.
