If you’re wondering where to head for your holiday next year, here’s five new destinations that everyone will be talking about in 2008. You heard it here first…

Hainan Island, China
Where's that? Just off the south coast, about one-and-a-half hour's flight from Hong Kong.

Why?
While the crowds head to Beijing for the Olympics, escape to this island paradise and experience a totally different side of China.

What is there to do?
Laze around on talcum powder beaches, interrupted by dips into crystal clear water. If you're feeling active, there are some amazing snorkelling spots, like Sanya Bay, which is teeming with wildlife and multi-coloured corals.

Make sure you see:
Sanya City. Amble around back alleys of the wharf area, which is littered with ancient teashops. Sit back, sip, and watch fishing boats unloading in the harbour. Take a rickshaw ride round the old town, and head to the beach for sunset.

What else?
For total relaxation head to Xinglong hot springs, where natural, geo-thermal baths will wash away any remaining stress.

When to go?
January and February. Hainan is the same latitude as Hawaii, making it the perfect winter escape.
