Dominica
Where's that? In the eastern Caribbean, two islands up from St Lucia.
Why? It's one of the few Caribbean islands that's yet to make it onto the mainstream tourist map. Uncrowded, unspoilt tropical paradise.
What is there to do?
Over 60 per cent of Domenica is rain forest - littered with hiking trails and gushing waterfalls. Trek up to the Boiling Lake, in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a vast volcanic lagoon with plumes of steam and sulphur smoke rising up from the depths of the earth.
What else?
Book a night at the Papillote, an "eco inn" tucked away in the rainforest. Fresh local food, colourful characters and natural hot springs to soak away aches and pains induced by hikes.
When to go?
The weather is driest from January to June.
