Santiago
British pirates used this island as a hide-out in the 1600s, loading up on fresh water, tortoise-meat and salt. Modern-day descendents of their goats, some 100,000 of them in all, still roam the island. Beside the salt mines at Puerto Egas are tide pools crammed with fascinating starfish, octopi and crabs. Just off the coast is Fur Seal Grotto, where the Galapagos hawk likes to stalk its prey, the lava lizard.
