Ferry breaks from the UK - Bilbao

Whether it's through a fear of flying or wanting to do things the green way, some of us simply don't want to get on a plane when we go off on holiday. Mercifully, there are many destinations that can be reached by ferry. And, while some of them are just grim port cities, others are fantastic spots for a short break. We've picked out five of the best.

Bilbao

Where: Northern Spain.
Why? Few destination have had such a makeover in recent years as this Basque city. When the fantastic Museo Guggenheim was built, Bilbao suddenly turned from a grim, industrial town to arguably the most exciting city in Spain.
From another perspective: Foodies can skip the culture and cider bars, and head to nearby San Sebastian, which is regarded as Spain's culinary capital. From Michelin-starred restaurants to pintxos (Basque-style tapas) outlets, it's a great place to get fat.
Who with: P&O.
Where from: Portsmouth.
