Ferry breaks from the UK - Amsterdam
Whether it's through a fear of flying or wanting to do things the green way, some of us simply don't want to get on a plane when we go off on holiday. Mercifully, there are many destinations that can be reached by ferry. And, while some of them are just grim port cities, others are fantastic spots for a short break. We've picked out five of the best.
Amsterdam
Where: The Netherlands.
Why? Eastern Europe's capitals may well have taken on Amsterdam's mantle as party central, but the Dutch city is still a place where you can have a mighty fine time. The bars, nightspots and special coffee shops are legendary.
From another perspective: If it's not all about engineering a nasty hangover, Amsterdam is also a cultural hotspot, with world class art galleries and sobering museums such as Anne Frank's House.
Who with: DFDS ferries have seven crossings a week.
Where from: Newcastle.
