Once a secretive pursuit indulged in by a minority of 'alternative' holidaymakers, nudist bathing has steadily grown in popularity throughout the world and is today more widespread and mainstream than ever. To celebrate this, we invite you to cast off your inhibitions - and swimsuits - and stroll proudly through our guide to Europe's best nudist beaches (provided by Bare Beaches, Lifestyle Press, £12.95).
1. Playa Mitjorn - Formentera, Balearic Islands
Six miles of beautiful sandy bays - easily accessible and yet largely unspoilt - attract some of the most discerning beach lovers in the world. With a brilliant blue sea that looks more like the Caribbean and countless little beach bars dotting the shoreline, Mitjorn has everything a bare bather could desire.
The beach attracts thousands of visitors, with plenty of space for dressed and naked bathers alike to find their little patch of heaven. Formentera is a short ferry ride away from its larger neighbour Ibiza, but feels like a world apart.
