Is summer over? Bank Holiday set to be a 'washout'PA

After enjoying the hottest day of the year so far this weekend, holidaymakers will be disappointed to hear that the August Bank Holiday is set to be a rain-drenched washout.

Sun-worshippers across the country headed to the coast this weekend to soak up the rays that saw Britain get hotter than Greece and the Caribbean.

The mercury soared to the highest it has been all year on Saturday, hitting 32.4C in Cavendish, Suffolk, beating the 30.7°C recorded at St. James' Park on 25 July.

But weather experts are now warning we could have seen the best of the summer.

Spokeswoman for The Met Office, Sarah Holland, told Aol Travel: "As we move over the next few days we will see temperatures dropping down to the low 20s in and around the south East – so not as warm as we saw over the weekend – though it will still feel quite humid."

But the Bank Holiday prediction is rather bleaker, with Sarah adding: "Although perhaps dry in eastern, southern and central parts this Friday, showers or longer spells of rain will quickly spread to all areas leaving conditions for the Bank Holiday Weekend generally very unsettled.

"Heavy showers are expected next Saturday and Sunday, showers then perhaps thundery in places with a risk of some locally heavy downpours. Some western and southwestern parts are also likely to be quite windy for a time early next weekend."
