A chauffeur sitting outside the luxury Peninsula hotel in Manhattan was nearly killed on Thursday by a man who jumped from the 22nd floor.

Engel Nicasio, 37, was just eating his breakfast at around 9am when the body landed on is car.

He told the NY Post: "God was on my side," said Nicasio. "If someone had been sitting in the passenger side, something really bad would have happened. The roof dent is very deep."

"[The jumper's] body was separated at the waist. It was frightening. I can't believe it happened."

The victim was identified as 40-year-old David Martinez. He was eating pancakes in the ground floor restaurant when he suddenly bolted up to the sun deck on the 22nd floor and jumped.

Mr Nicasio added: "I didn't know what to think. I just bent down," he said. "I stepped out from the vehicle and I noticed it was a body."

"Somebody had to actually pull me out and sit me down across the street from the hotel and give me a bottle of water."
