Hottest day of the year to hit Britain this weekPA

It's great news for holidaymakers and tourist sites across the country - Britain is heading for the hottest day of the year this week, with temperatures set to hit 86F (30C).

After waiting for what seems like an eternity, summer has decided to arrive just in time for the first week of the school holidays.

Forecasters are predicting Wednesday will be the hottest day of the year so far, hitting 30C. The highest temperature up until now was 84.7F (29.3C), recorded at Achnagart in the Scottish Highlands in late May.

Met Office forecaster Helen Waite told the Telegraph: "Southern parts are going to stay under high pressure with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the middle of the week picking up to the high 20s, possibly even a 30, most likely in the south, around Wednesday."

Sarah Holland, Met Office spokeswoman, told Aol Travel: "We could see the hottest day of the year as temperatures pick up towards the middle of the week.

"The hottest day so far was 25 May at Achnagart in the Highlands.

"By Wednesday we could see temperatures of 29/30 possibly even 31C in the south and London.

"For many this fine, warm and sunny weather is set to continue for the next couple of days.

"The best of the weather will be in central and southern parts with lots of unbroken sunshine. As we head towards the middle of the week the cloud over the north of the UK will edge southwards with the southeast hanging on to the best of the weather until Thursday."

Following the wettest April and June on record, it's certainly welcome news - but will the nice weather last for the Olympics opening ceremony this weekend?

Sarah Holland added: "Friday is looking warm, dry with sunny spells during the day, however it will become increasingly humid.

"There is an increasing chance of showers developing through the day however we are still a few days away.

"The London area will see top temperatures of 25C on Friday."

Billy Payne, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, wasn't quite so optimistic, telling the Daily Mail: "Towards the end of the week it is going to get a lot cooler and more unsettled. It looks as though there's a risk of heavy showers, certainly in the south-east corner of the country.

"Temperatures should still be somewhere around the mid-twenties on Friday, and it is likely to be cooler over the weekend."
