After dreadful weekend summer 'heat spikes' to hit Britain next weekPA

After winds and rain affected Royal Ascot and the Isle of Wight Festival this week, and Cumbria was drenched in four inches of rain last night, there's some good news as forecasters have predicted a heat 'spike' in time for Wimbledon next week.

As Britain experiences the wettest June on record, the Met Office has warned that the heavy rain will continue this morning with torrential downpours and winds of up to 60mph.

Jonathan Powell of Vantage Weather Services said: 'There is a dreadful weekend on the way.'

But there will be a blast of summer warmth next week when temperatures will soar to highs of 82F by Friday, the Express reported.

Powell told the newspaper: 'This will be another of the summer heat spikes.'

Forecasters say low pressure responsible for the unusual cool weather will shift to allow hot air to come in from Spain.

Yesterday saw downpours across Britain with parts of the North-west on severe flood alert and many outdoor events cancelled and disrupted. The Great North Swim in Windermere, Cumbria was postponed and the Olympic Torch's arrival in Blackpool was cancelled with the lighting of the cauldron moved to inside.
