Banker kicked off Qantas flight for 'refusing to turn off mobile phone'PA

A banking executive was kicked off a Qantas flight from LA to Sydney after allegedly displaying disruptive behaviour and refusing to turn off his phone.

Alan James, and New York-based Australian banker, was on board flight QF108 when the incident occurred.

The senior managing director for Macquarie had a seat in business class, and first irked cabin crew when he refused to turn his mobile off while the aircraft was taxiing at New York's John F Kennedy Airport.

After the plane had landed at LA International Airport, another conversation with Qantas staff took place, and Mr James was later prevented from boarding a connecting flight to Sydney.

A spokesman for Qantas told the Sydney Morning Herald: "A male passenger was denied travel on Qantas flight 108 from Los Angeles to Sydney on 22 May after behaving disruptively and refusing to follow crew instructions."

The airline's policy is to be ban disruptive passengers from flying for 24 hours; Mr James was allowed to take another Qantas flight to Sydney the next day.

A spokeswoman for the FBI confirmed that it was informed about an incident on board the flight between New York and LA but no federal charges have been filed.
