Pregnant woman killed as car crashes into hotel swimming pool
A pregnant woman has been killed on the last day of her holiday in Florida after a car spun out of control and crashed into the poolside cabana where she had gone to use the bathroom.
Teaching assistant Alanna Demella, 27, from Medford, Massachussetts, was seven months pregnant with a baby boy when she was struck in the pool area at the Riverside Hotel at about 1.30pm on Sunday, according to the Huffington Post.
The driver of the car, Rosa Rivera Kim, 35, lost control, went over the pavement, smashed through the side of the building and into the cabana, where the vehicle reportedly pinned Alanna against the wall.
Rosa is being treated for non life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.
Alanna's husband Michael DeMella - who was treated for minor injuries - was in severe shock.
Onlookers Joanne and Darren Gordon told CBS Boston that Michael came out of the men's room just feet away from his wife: "He was just saying my wife's in there, why did this happen, why did this happen?" said Darren.
Joanne added."He was just (in) complete shock, he was white."
Darren said that both of them, along with other hotel guests, attempted to reach Alanna and free her from the wreckage.
But another onlooker, Mike Riemondi, told CBS Miami that the believes Alanna was "killed instantly".
It is not yet known what exactly caused the accident, or what charges Rosa Rivera Kim might face.
