Prince William and Kate Middleton in 'mid-air collision' near missPA

It has been claimed today that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were left shaken after the return flight from their November 2011 trip to Copenhagen narrowly avoided a mid-air collision with another passenger plane.

The BA flight was reportedly about to land when the pilot had to make a last-minute climb to avoid another plane that hadn't cleared a runway in time.

According to the Daily Mail, the Duchess was left quite upset by the incident, which happened after the couple had enjoyed their first humanitarian trip together in the Danish capital.

A source told The People newspaper: "This really was a serious incident and would have been terrifying for those on board.

"The aircraft ahead of them hadn't cleared the runway in time for the plane carrying the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to land.

"For anyone who didn't know what was going on it would have been extremely worrying."

A British Airways spokesperson played down the incident, however, saying the aircraft landed safety and passengers disembraked as usual. He told the Daily Mail: "Our crew were told by air traffic control to perform a go-around – a perfectly standard operation with no safety implications – because an aircraft from another airline hadn't fully cleared the runway.

"Safety is always our priority and all our pilots are fully trained to deal with procedures of this kind."

It's not the first time the royal couple have experienced a 'hiccup' on a BA flight.

The airline offered to pay Prince William and Kate Middleton £200 compensation because their in-flight entertainment failed on their flight home from Los Angeles last year.

BA presented the royal couple with duty-free vouchers after the screens broke down as they returned from their Canadian and American tour.

But the gracious pair reportedly politely declined the offer.
